Hello fellow nerds!
My name is Brian Hermansen, and I am the CEO and founder of Ultra Evil Studios! This blog post is a quick and simple introduction about me, a little bit about my personal life, my passions and hobbies, and the creation of Ultra Evil Studios.
I grew up in a little town called Pocatello, Idaho. Growing up, I was heavily into a variety of nerdy things, but especially video games & books. My nerdiness began development in 5th grade when I was literally forced to read “The Hobbit” for school. I absolutely loved it – I picked up the Fellowship of the Ring and quickly devoured the remainder of the epic books by J.R.R. Tolkien. Today, in my office, I have every single novel written by J.R.R. Tolkien on display, and many, many different editions of the Lord of the Rings.
Above all, I am a huge Zelda fan. My office is a ridiculous display of beautiful, complete in box games, systems and more. My favorite game is a toss up – I love the classicness of A Link to the Past, but my go to game is probably The Wind Waker (I prefer the HD version, which may be the unpopular choice – that Triforce fetch quest is so much better in the HD version).
I am happily married with a beautiful wife and an adorable son named Benjamin. Though my wife didn’t know it, he is named after Ben Kenobi (she said no to Link and Strider, and I almost convinced her to name him Kaladin). I call the little dude Master Kenobi most of the time. My wife is incredibly supportive and helps out with a ton of the work for all of my various companies.
I caught the entrepreneurship bug at a young age. My father was very entrepreneurial, and my brothers were all running their own businesses. I never wanted a 9 – 5 job, and I am so glad I have continued to push to create my own success – I absolutely love going to work every day, because I know that I love doing what I do. I started my first business when I was 16 years old, helping local musicians record and release their music independently. To this day, I use the knowledge and skills I developed from that company to help independent authors record and release audio books.
The Creation of Ultra Evil Studios
My love for card games and board games started when I was fairly older (20 years old). For a time, I got heavily into Dungeons and Dragons, though I am sad to admit that I have hardly had any time to play recently. In early 2015, I started a company that focused primarily on books. My partner at the time, Blake, brought the idea of a card game to me. I was hesitant at first, as we had never ventured into the gaming world, and it was quite a daunting task. I was on board, so long as we stuck to one simple rule – the game couldn’t be extremely complicated. I didn’t want our first game to be one with a crazy learning curve. So we decided to move forward with the game, and decided that Kickstarter was the perfect place to launch our first game!
And so we created Stormweavers – a fun, simple card game that required a lot of strategy while still being easy to learn and play. We launched on Kickstarter with great success, raising almost $25,000 with over 500 backers.
Since then, we’ve continued to provide entertainment to our loyal customers and fans. Most recently, we released War of the Races, and plan on launching several new games in the future. We are also working on a few apps and video games, which we will announce as they get closer to release.
Working for and creating products for Ultra Evil Studios is a literally a dream come true, and I couldn’t be happier with the people I get to spend my time with and the customers who have bought from us. None of this would have been possible without you!
We can’t wait to continue our journey with you and create new experiences that we can all join together! Please feel free to follow me on Twitter (@brianhermansen) and stay updated on all future projects! Thanks again for your support!
